Turn Worst Times to Best — Part II

Here's another proven strategy for growing your business during a recession.

INVEST IN MARKETING AND ADVERTISING. As Paul Van Erem writes in his "Business Growth During Recession" article, "McGraw-Hill Research analyzed 600 companies from 1980-1985. The results showed that business-to-business firms that maintained or increased their advertising expenditures during the 1981-1982 recession averaged significantly higher sales growth — both during the recession and for the following three years — compared to those that eliminated or decreased advertising. In addition, a series of six studies conducted by the research firm Meldrum & Fewsmith showed conclusively that advertising aggressively during recessions not only increases sales but increased profits."

START BY CONDUCTING MARKET RESEARCH and developing a marketing plan to guide your efforts. Then implement guerrilla marketing, that is to say, free or low-budget marketing strategies and tactics. Consider Boundless Corporation. TMS helped guide their strategic business planning, market analysis, and marketing for the launch of their state-of-the-art line of lithium-ion battery management systems. As a result of this action, is it any surprise that growth followed?

What's your marketing plan? Proactive companies thrive in a recession! They research, plan, and then take marketing action.

Be Thankful

My mother's favorite saying in the last decade of her life was, "Life is short. Death is sure." Yet too many of us take life for granted including me. I write this on the airplane as I return from the funeral of my 47-year-old friend, Jonathan. After a courageous battle with brain cancer, Jon's life was cut short, leaving family and friends in shock and pain. It could have been me, you, your co-worker, or your loved one. All we each have is today — are you living today the life you want? If not, take a small step to change it. If yes, appreciate it.

Now is the perfect time to "Access Progress" and be grateful. What are you thankful for? Forget all the things you can gripe about. Take stock of all that makes your life and your work rich and fulfilling. Focus on the thousand things that went right today.
